Cover of the first edition

The Tailor of Gloucester, written by Beatrix Potter, was first privately printed, in a limited edition of 400 copies, in 1902; Frederick Warne & Co. published their first edition in 1903. It is a beautiful Christmas tale that many people know but it's always worth to read it again or see the animated version!

Of all his books, The Tailor of Gloucester was her preferred tale.
It 's the story of a poor tailor and his assistants mice. The story is based on a real incident that happened to John Pritchard (1877-1934), the Tailor of Gloucester who was commissioned the preparation of a waistcoat dress for the new mayor. One Saturday morning, after leaving unfinished work in his shop was surprised to find it done on Monday. Only one slot was not laced because 'there was no thread'. In fact they were his assistants to finish the job and the story became a local legend.
Beatrix took the setting of the story on Christmas Eve, when the animals can talk and introduced traditional nursery rhymes.
The book was dedicated to Freda Moore a little childe.
